EMDR helps your brain process and release memories or beliefs that are “stuck” because of past trauma. Instead of reliving the pain, EMDR helps you reprocess the memory so it feels more distant and less distressing — like something that happened, not something that’s still happening.
During EMDR, your therapist will guide you to briefly recall a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as moving your eyes back and forth, light physical tapping and/or listening to alternating tones. This stimulation is thought to help your brain "digest" the memory in a more adaptive way, similar to how we process experiences during REM sleep.During the treatment planning phase you will identify a memory or experience to work on. Your therapist will ask brief questions
Bilateral stimulation (BLS) is a core part of EMDR therapy. It refers to any rhythmic, back-and-forth stimulation that alternates between the left and right sides of the body or brain. It’s used during EMDR to help the brain process distressing memories more adaptively.
In EMDR, you do not have to describe your trauma fully or relive every part of it. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses more on what’s happening internally (like emotions, body sensations, or images) rather than retelling the story out loud.

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counseling. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or simply want support navigating life changes or emotional patterns, therapy can help.
The first session is usually a chance to get to know each other. You’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, your goals, and your therapist will explain how they work. It's also a chance to see if the relationship feels like a good fit.
That depends on your goals and situation. Some people feel relief in a few sessions; others benefit from longer-term support. You and your therapist will decide together what feels right.
